![]() ![]() In secondary schools, even the most liberal history masters underplayed the gruesome details of that conquest as it evolved into full-scale colonisation. ![]() This was enough to whet the imperial appetite: Paris dispatched the Army to Algeria and a retaliatory expedition turned into conquest. We knew that in 1830, the Bey of Algiers had slapped a French consul in the course of an argument about debt. We were the unfortunate, unwilling heirs of French history: the building of the Empire had been sanitised for us by our school books and teachers. Some of us felt we were involved in the wrong conflict, on the wrong side. ![]() We could only nurse our nostalgia, and, as French citizens subject to national service, we were forced to take part in the unsavoury end of the colonial adventure in North Africa. In those easy Manichaean years, not having read Koestler or Orwell, some of us even wished we’d been able to fight with the International Brigades in Spain. We weren’t old enough to have joined either the Free French in Britain or the Resistance against the Nazis in France. I had been called up for 12 months, but like many young Frenchmen of that unlucky generation, I was kept in the Army nearly two and a half years owing to unforeseen ‘events’ in North Africa. In 1954 I was stationed near Versailles, doing my national service with the 93rd Infantry Regiment. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We laughed at much of the dialogue and wacky plot twists and were well entertained. ![]() Thankfully she wasn't injured and the audience was patient and understanding about the whole debacle.Ĭonversely, City Lit's Hay Fever went off without a hiccup and was an immensely enjoyable night out. Prior to Hay Fever, my most memorable Noël Coward experience was a 1985 college production of Blithe Spirit at Anderson University in Indiana, where the not so ethereal ghost was a plus sized actress who fell through the stage staircase mid act! They had to stop the play and help extricate her from the rubble. Horrible humans behaving badly are eternally timeless yet timely. His artsy, eccentric, manipulative characters are delightfully funny. It's exciting Chicago audiences can do a mini immersive in Coward's period pieces with City Lit's Jeff Recommended Hay Fever from 1924 and Private Lives from 1931. Just one week after reviewing Hay Fever, I'll be out to see yet another Noël Coward play, Private Lives, opening at Raven Theatre. In the microcosm of Chicago's theatre scene, it's amazing how many synchronicities there are. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() So what exactly happened in that ending, after the hapless hydrologist Ward ( Elliot Knight) returns to the Gardner house to try and save the family only to have the shit hit the interdimensional fan? Obviously, SPOILERS are ahead, so if you haven’t watched Color Out of Space you should probably do that before you read any further, and also what the hell are you doing with your life? Stanley does an excellent job of adapting the cacophonous madness that punctuates virtually every Lovecraft story, which consequently means that it’s a bit confusing. Things hit a fever pitch in the last 20 minutes, when the world goes full-Lovecraft and logic is obliterated into cosmic dust set to a soundtrack of Nicolas Cage doing his voice from Vampire’s Kiss. The movie is a gorgeous piece of surreal psychological horror, with some gen-u-ine gore and body horror thrown in for good measure, just in case you thought the Color was all about mind games. ![]() ![]() ![]() The players refuse to be led by a girl, the cheerleaders are mad about the changes to their traditions, and the fact that Robbie’s been not only replaced but outshined by a QB who wears a sports bra has more than a few Atherton Alligators in a rage. Cherie Dimaline shows the importance of dreaming by using a group of indigenous people and pictures of some well-known people who are not indigenous. The story is mostly structured around dreams that examine the theme of foresight, suggesting that only the optimistic would succeed in the long run. After capturing the native students, they used them for their marrow. The Recruiters looked to the past practice of constructing residential schools as a blueprint for their current endeavor. Frenchie, the protagonist and a boy of fifteen, and his companions try to evade the Recruiters by fleeing to the north (Brock). Donating marrow requires killing unwilling subjects. ![]() The evil government is on the lookout for a dreamer who will remove the marrow and cure the rest of the populace, which has lost the ability to dream. The supporting characters have had an incredible impact on the storyline as well - especially Rose, who has been held hostage the longest (three years).
